Mahale is remote in a way little else in Tanzania is: forested mountains dropping straight into Lake Tanganyika, no roads, and a community of wild chimpanzees habituated to people since the 1960s. You arrive by light aircraft and then by boat, and you track chimps on foot through the forest.
Tracking chimpanzees
Guides find the group most mornings. When you reach them you have an hour, sitting close while they feed, groom and argue overhead.
The lake
Tanganyika is the second-deepest lake in the world and clear enough to snorkel. Afternoons here are for the water.

How hard is the trekking?
It varies. Some days the chimps are twenty minutes away, others it is a steep two-hour walk in humid forest. Reasonable fitness is needed.
