Mount Meru — 4 Days, Momella Route
Tanzania's second mountain by the only route to its summit — and the best acclimatisation there is before Kilimanjaro.
Four days from Momella Gate to Socialist Peak and back, sleeping in mountain huts, with a park ranger alongside you through the forest. Climbed for its own sake it is one of the finest ridge walks in East Africa; climbed a week before Kilimanjaro it is the single most useful thing you can do for your summit chances.

Arusha to Miriakamba Hut
Drive 32 km from Arusha to Momella Gate, sign in and meet the park ranger who walks with the group. The first hours cross open grassland where giraffe, buffalo and warthog graze, then climb into montane forest. Miriakamba Hut sits in a clearing with the ash cone framed above and the Momella lakes below.

Miriakamba to Saddle Hut
A steep morning through heather and giant lobelia to Saddle Hut, set on the col between Big Meru and Little Meru. After lunch, an optional 90-minute walk to the top of Little Meru (3,820 m) for sunset — short, and it makes a real difference to how you feel on summit night.

Summit day — Socialist Peak, then down to Miriakamba
Leave around midnight for Rhino Point, then along the crater rim: a narrow ridge with the ash cone on one side and a 1,500 m drop on the other, scrambling in places. Socialist Peak at sunrise, with Kilimanjaro floating above the cloud to the east. Back to Saddle for breakfast, then all the way down to Miriakamba.

Miriakamba to Momella Gate, and back to Arusha
A gentle forest descent on the shorter northern path, past waterfalls and usually a good deal of wildlife. Certificates at the gate, and back in Arusha by early afternoon.

Questions about this trip
Is four days better than three?
Yes. The three-day version cuts the Little Meru walk and pushes straight from Saddle Hut to the gate on the final day. Four days is more comfortable and acclimatises you better.
How exposed is the summit ridge?
In places it is narrow with steep ground either side, and there is some scrambling. It is not technical, but it is not a path you would wander along inattentively.
