Safari

Arusha National Park

Giraffe, buffalo and the Momella lakes, forty minutes from town.

The small park on Arusha's doorstep, wrapped around the lower slopes of Mount Meru. Three habitats in one short drive: the Ngurdoto crater, the Momella lakes with their flamingos, and montane forest full of black-and-white colobus. It is also the only northern park where you can legally walk with an armed ranger.

A day, not a week

Arusha National Park is the best single day of game viewing in northern Tanzania — an easy morning drive, back in town for dinner. It is the usual first or last day of a longer trip.

Walking safaris

Guided walks on the lower slopes put you on foot among giraffe, warthog and buffalo. It is a completely different experience from watching from a vehicle.

The gateway to Meru

Momella Gate, where every Mount Meru climb begins, is inside this park. The first hours of the trek are effectively a game walk.

About Arusha National Park

Is it worth a day if I am also doing the Serengeti?

Yes, especially on your first day — it is gentle, close, and the walking safari is something the bigger parks cannot offer.
