Baobabs, and the biggest elephant herds in northern Tanzania.
Tarangire is built around a single river that holds water when everything around it has dried out. From July onward the game concentrates along it in numbers that rival the Serengeti, and the park has the largest elephant population in northern Tanzania — herds of several hundred are not unusual.
The landscape is unlike anywhere else on the northern circuit: ancient baobabs scattered across rolling grassland, with elephants working the trees for bark and moisture.
Tarangire sits an easy two hours from Arusha and is usually the first or last stop on a northern circuit. It sees far fewer vehicles than Ngorongoro or the Serengeti.
