Lake Natron

Flamingos, an active volcano, and the Rift Valley at its harshest.

A shallow, caustic soda lake under Ol Doinyo Lengai, the only active carbonatite volcano on earth. It is the single most important breeding site for East Africa's lesser flamingos, and the landscape around it is the most severe and the most beautiful in northern Tanzania.

Flamingos

Hundreds of thousands breed here because almost nothing else can survive the water. Walking out towards them at first light is the reason to come.

Ol Doinyo Lengai

The Maasai call it the Mountain of God. It can be climbed overnight — a hard, steep, loose ascent that starts around midnight.

Waterfalls and gorges

The Ngare Sero gorge behind the lake ends in a waterfall you wade to. It is the coolest hour of the day.
