Zanzibar
Stone Town, spice farms and the Indian Ocean, an hour from the plains.
Zanzibar is a short flight from Arusha and the natural end to a safari or a climb. Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site of carved doors and narrow lanes; the east and north coasts are white sand and reef. Most people come for the beach and stay an extra day for the town.
Stone Town
Half a day on foot with a good guide covers the old slave market, the House of Wonders, the fish market and the Forodhani food stalls at dusk. The history is not always comfortable and is better for it.
Which coast
Nungwi and Kendwa in the north have swimmable water at all tides. The east coast at Paje and Jambiani has the wider beaches and the kitesurfing, but the tide goes a long way out.
Spices and reef
A spice farm tour is genuinely interesting and takes half a day. Mnemba atoll offers the best snorkelling and diving on the island.

How many nights are enough?
Three to four after a safari or climb. Two is enough only if you skip Stone Town.
